Dustin was raised in a home with four sisters and one brother. His father worked as a teacher and his mother as a dental hygienist. From an early age, Dustin learned the value of hard work. He spent his summers working on a farm and at the age of 9 began delivering newspapers. Growing up, Dustin was actively involved in sports, church youth programs, and Boy Scouts. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout by the age of 14.
Following high school, Dustin spent two years living in Puebla, Mexico, where he learned to speak fluent Spanish and became enchanted with the rich history and culture of Latin America. Dustin carried this passion for Latin American culture with him all the way to college at Brigham Young University, where he studied Comparative Literature with an emphasis on Latin American Literature. The highlights of Dustin’s undergraduate college experience include: Publishing his honors thesis about Mayan literature, living with an indigenous family in Guatemala while learning to speak K’iche, winning the 2009 intramural innertube water-polo championship, graduating with honors and most importantly marrying the love of his life, Sabrina Packard.
